Breweries in South Africa
South Africa has a long and interesting history of brewing and drinking the fine stuff we call beer today.
Beer is probably the oldest human-produced beverage dating back to at least the 7th millennium BC. It was invented in the ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
As almost any substance containing carbohydrates, namely sugar or starch, can naturally undergo fermentation, it is likely that beer-like beverages were independently invented among various cultures throughout the world.
The "original" Southern African beers are sorghum and maize beers. African sorghum beer is a brownish-pink beverage with a fruity, sour, sorghum like taste with an alcohol content that can vary between 1% and 8%. Sorghum beer is high in protein, which contributes to foam stability, giving it a milk-like head. The beer is not getting filtered, so its appearance is cloudy and yeasty. The beer is said to be very thirst quenching even if it is traditionally consumed at room temperature.
The European beer came to Southern Africa with the first European Settlers. Dutch, English and German settlers, who colonised the country brought expertise and know-how as the country was populated. While the French colonists contributed to the wine production, the Germans, Dutch and English started brewing beer.
