Safari Field Guide Course - Responsibletravel.com

Country: South Africa - Kruger National Park
Departures: Departures are available on the first Monday of every month
Price: From £895 (28 days) excluding flights. Six month course also available from £4595 starting January or July

Four week course (28 days)
Training complies with all the standards set out by the Guiding Association of South Africa and is led by renowned trainers. Subjects covered include: Ecology, Botany and Taxonomy as well as Tracking, Identification, Weapons Handling and Bush Driving. The course is structured to maximise the practical experience of students in the bush. Each day allows for hours of time spent in the field interpreting the ecology and enjoying a wildlife experience in South Africa's beautiful wilderness. It is hoped that these courses on their own, or combined with a expedition allow a greater understanding and involvement of our world's habitats. Our base is a Wilderness Camp, situated in a true wilderness area in the Kruger National Park. The entry point is Numbi Gate and the wilderness area stretches to the southern Malelane area.
This course provides wildlife enthusiasts with a thorough insight and introduction in the world of field guiding.

Six month course (starting January or July only)
If you are looking for a career that will be an adventure, or a hands-on experience in the bush that you will never forget, this course is for you. This is a 6 month course which is the ideal platform for a successful career in the African game lodge industry. Over the years, field guiding has become more specialised and sophisticated. It has become a career, which is increasingly viable in larger areas of Southern Africa as tourism continues to grow, but also one which demands dedication and education.
This course has been designed to develop highly skilled professionals in this exciting area of field guiding and lodge management, by providing a well-rounded and specialised education. Students spend six months practical and academic training on campus. The curriculum includes bush skills such as shooting, 4x4 driving and bush knowledge such as conservation, reserve management, geology and animal behavior. The lodge management section includes supervisory skills and many varied aspects of how to work in lodges in the African Bush.
The academic curriculum is accredited by the Field Guide Association of Southern Africa (the industries leading independent body on the training and operation of field guides throughout South Africa), the South Africa Qualifications Board and the Hospitality, Education and Sports Training Authority. The curriculum has been developed by accomplished industry experts. Unlike many other training providers, this course gives students a regular exposure to working and guiding around dangerous game, such as Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Leopard, Cheetah and Hippo.
This is invaluable experience and gives students excellent grounding for placements and possible future employment in ‘Big Five’ reserves. The course is run from two campuses in the Limpopo province in the northeastern region of South Africa, an area famous for its big game and dramatic scenery of the African bush and the Drakensberg mountains.

Start: Johannesburg
End: Johannesburg
Day 1: Depart the urban wilds of Johannesburg early. Discover the vast plains of the Kruger National Park where the Big Five roam. The Park is home to 150 species of mammal, including Africa's famed Big Five. The staggering 507 bird species, plus the wide variety of insects, reptiles and amphibians make this the ultimate wildlife experience. Jump onboard an open safari vehicle to explore the park in search of iconic wildlife. In the evening head out once more for a sunset safari drive and keep an eye peeled for night predators.
Day 2: Depart at first light for an entire day's game viewing. With luck there'll be close encounters with lions, elephants and even a giraffe or two. Settle for the evening in a centrally located campsite and swap tales of close encounters around the campfire. Enjoy another early morning game drive before free time to explore at your own pace. There's opportunity to visit the Mafunyani Cultural Village to learn about traditional dance and song and feast in a boma, a traditional-style African house. Or visit an animal orphanage for a different kind of wildlife viewing.
Day 3: Complete the Kruger experience with an early morning nature walk. Explore the wilderness one last time with a field guide and learn how to track wild animals. Sadly it's time to bid Kruger farewell.

6 or 7 day Kruger National Park Walking Safari - Responsibletravel.com

Country: South Africa
Location: Kruger National Park
Departures: Departs every Sunday (7 days) and Thursday (6 days) throughout the year

On arrival at Johannesburg International Airport you will be transferred to your hotel, located close to the airport. The following morning, you will be collected from your hotel at first light and transferred to the reserve gate. The journey takes approximately 5 hours with stops along the way. You will meet your ranger at a lovely bush pub at the edge of the reserve, where you will sign indemnity forms and have lunch together. After lunch, we transfer you into open safari vehicles to one of our bush camps in Klaserie or Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, making sure that you spend the maximum time out in the bush!

The 7 day walking safari will take you to two different camps in two different Reserves in the Greater Kruger National Park, changing camps midweek. This adds on to that true safari feeling and will give you a chance to explore two different areas.
The 6 day walking safari remains in one camp with an exciting optional sleep-out in a fly-camp in the same reserve. For people who really want to go back to basics for a night, this is a must-do!

In the mornings we set off at first light after a snack breakfast of rusks and coffee or tea. Enjoying the cool morning air we may walk directly from camp or else use a vehicle to get further out. Your ranger will decipher the tracks and signs left by the passing animals during the night. The thrill of walking, tracking and getting up close to one of the creatures of the bush is an unforgettable experience. On the walks there is a lot of emphasis on all the interesting things seen such as trees, plants, insects and birds. A big breakfast is prepared back in camp and then there is time to unwind and siesta during the heat of the day. After lunch it is time to head out again.
The afternoon activity is a walk/drive combination, looking for tracks and activity in other areas. After the walk we drive to a beautiful spot in the Reserve, where we’ll have sundowners while waiting for a stunning African sunset. As the diurnal animals and birds anxiously get ready for sleep, the stage and sounds change and a whole new world awakens. This is when we connect the spotlight and night-drive back to camp, looking for the nocturnal creatures that are so rarely seen during the day. Back in camp a hearty supper and a warm campfire will be waiting for you. After a long day in the bush there is nothing more rewarding then to sneak off to bed and listen to the sounds of the night under a blanket of the unforgettable African stars!
On the last day of hiking you will still go out for one last walk. Sniffing the typical scents of the bush you’ll realise how much you’ve learned already! After breakfast it’s time to pack up and go back to the bush pub, where you will pay the Conservation Fee and the drinks you’ve consumed in our camps. Then we say our goodbyes and transfer you back to your Johannesburg hotel.
The following morning you will be transferred back to Johannesburg International Airport.
