Voluntourism - worldwide
Climate Care is a service that helps you to repair the damage your activities do to the climate. It does this by ‘offsetting' the greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2, from your activities by reducing an equivalent amount of CO2 on your behalf. These reductions are made through a range of projects in renewable energy and energy efficiency, which not only fight climate change but bring benefits to communities round the world. You can offset emissions from flying, driving and household energy use. To find out more visit www.climatecare.org.

Travelling through Southern Africa means travelling through a developing part of the world. South Africa might be an exception in some areas, but definitely not everywhere.
Supporting community projects, ecotourism or fair trade tourism projects can be a very important contribution to the environment.
But why does this become a topic for backpackers and individual travellers?
Backpacker are normally people, who are travelling on a budget going to places off the main road. This is making backpackers precursors for "normal" kinds of tourism. This is a problem on the one hand, but on the other hand it is giving us the chance of supporting alternative tourism projects.
Most of the tourists in Southern Africa are coming from overseas - Europe, the US, Oz, New Zealand and Asia. Travelling by air is almost the only way to get to Southern Africa, but flying is also the biggest contributor to one of the most serious environmental threads - the rapidly changing climate.
